Our Garden by Linda Cobb

My Trip to England this Summer

Linda Cobb spent two weeks visiting England's premier gardens and met some very interesting people along the way. Now that summer is here it is time to buckle down and get through the hot summer.

I was very fortunate to be able to travel to England in May and attend the Chelsea Flower Show and also visit some of England’s premier gardens like Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Wisley, Leonardslee, and Chartwell, just to name a few.  When we arrived it was quite a shock to go from 90 degrees in South Carolina to 50 degrees in England, but I muddled through somehow (ha!).

Linda McHam, from Copper Beech Garden Tours arranged an "insider’s look" at the special gardens of England, which meant that we got fabulous garden tours from the head gardeners themselves, like Fergus Garrett.  This world-renown head gardener is now the passion behind the gardens at Greata Dixter. When Christopher Lloyd passed away in January of 2006, he left Fergus in charge of it all.

Fergus has a passionate commitment to this garden of many bold colors and diverse plantings.  He is launching a campaign to save the garden by becoming a "friend" of Great Dixter.  To find out more you can log onto http://greatdixter.co.uk/friends.htm It is very important that the passion of the gardens are preserved.  Fergus is keeping that great Christo Lloyd spirit alive.
